Since September 11, 2001, the Statue of Liberty has
been closed from head to toe. Yet the Department of Interior (DOI) and the National Park Service (NPS) still
refuses to fully reopen the one landmark that truly represents the freedom and
liberty that we hold dear in America.
We are deeply saddened that future generations may never know this great
American experience. We are saddened all the more at the reason why.
Terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center, but they didn't take these
other things away from us. We are taking them away from ourselves.
On August 3, 2004 the DOI and NPS
reopened Lady
Liberty's pedestal. The DOI and NPS think visitors should only be able to
stand atop the 150-foot-high pedestal near her feet. Some people think that
stinks! Lets not let her be know as the Statue of
Limitations.
Today is the day to let the DOI and NPS know you want Lady Liberty fully re-opened
and that the terrorists will
not alter our way of life.
Act Today: Click the picture of Gale Norton on the
top right to send a prewritten e-mail demanding that the
Statue of Liberty is fully reopened all the way to the crown.
Here is a copy of the pre-written e-mail going to
the DOI and NPS:
Dear Department of Interior and
National Park Service,
The NPS recently cited 3 fires
that would relate to problems inside Lady Liberty, Shirtwaist Factory fire
in New York in 1911, Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston in 1942, and the
Station nightclub in West Warwick, R.I., in 2003. All of which had highly
flammable material fueling the fire. How does copper and steel burn with no
fuel source?
Limit access with timed
tickets, charge a fee, have visitors sign a waiver. If you wanted it
reopened, it could be.
If it's too hot inside or it's
too steep or it's too crowed inside or their butt is to big to fit, then
they can stay outside!
“Terrorism” is using the act
of terror to instill fear in the people surrounding the target. Keeping the
crown closed because “something might happen” means that their mission was
an astounding success. Even though you say it has nothing to do with 9-11.
Are people restricted from the
top of Half Dome in California because you need to be in good health to
climb or because it could fall like the other half onto the valley floor?
NO!
Are people restricted from
Lake Mead NRA in Nevada because if they don't know how to swim they could
drown? NO!
Are people restricted from the
St Louis Arch or the Washington Monument? No! Those were built before fire
codes were strict and although they have large elevators, they can't all get
out within 2 1/2 minutes. But they are still open!
We Americans won't allow
terrorists to alter our way of life, and we sure don't want to allow the DOI
or NPS to do so either. I want the one landmark that
truly represents the freedom and liberty of America to be fully reopened to
pre-September 11 glory.
Reopen the crown of the Statue
of Liberty!
Sincerely, [insert your name]
